The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same
In the beginning there was D&D, and there was much rejoicing. Except for the people who thought they were demon-worshipers. Then there was DOOM, and everyone started killing each other. Or maybe not.
I’ve been playing games since I was a kid with the original NES. I remember the hours of struggling through Mario and Zelda, then seeing my siblings pick up the controller and breeze through it. This was unfair! I deserved to win, just like they did! I should be given a free ride in the game, since the world hates me, Nintendo is evil, ’cause it’s making money off my failure…
Yes, that is sarcasm. I do that sometimes. I have opinions, just like you, though they may be different from yours. Don’t expect me to apologize. Does that make me right? No. Does that make YOU right? No. Is anyone right? That’s a discussion that philosophers have been arguing over for all of time.
I’m a gamer, though I might need to use that term loosely. I’m not into the tabletop gaming scene, but I can appreciate those who do; I’m not a console guy, mostly due to costs involved; I’m a PC guy, not a Mac guy (I sometimes get flak for this from my designer friends), not because I’m prejudice against the giant evil known as Apple, but because they’re grossly overpriced and were limited in their gaming uses while I was growing up.
I’m going to piss people off with my viewpoints. It’s a fact that cannot be avoided–more importantly, it SHOULDN’T be avoided. I’ll probably wax philosophic from time to time (read: all the time), sometimes about subjects that aren’t necessarily related to gaming, and I would encourage visitors to engage in open discussion. Note: I say “discussion”, not “argument”. A respectful debate doesn’t include name calling, flaming, trolling, or any of that other fun stuff that ruins my day and generally calls down ire from on high. I reserve the right to silence said comments in the name of free speech.
No, that’s not a typo. We’re not a democracy or a republic or whatever political form you want to prescribe to, we’re a me-ocracy. I’m in charge here. I don’t profess to be objective in my views. Anyone who claims this privilege is blinded by their own subjectivity. Yes, this is you.
Next post: we talk games. Go figure.
